Signs Your Car Needs Rust Repair
5 min read · Updated February 2026
The obvious signs
Bubbling, blistering or flaking paint — especially along door bottoms, rocker panels and wheel well lips. Orange or brown stains dripping from body seams after rain. Visible holes or crumbling metal anywhere on the exterior.
The less obvious signs
Doors that no longer close cleanly or line up with the body — a common symptom of rusted rockers or floor pans. Damp or musty smells inside the cabin, indicating water is finding its way through a rusted floor. Rust flakes falling from the underbody when you drive over speed bumps.
The invisible signs
Frame corrosion visible only from underneath the vehicle. Loose or corroded seatbelt anchor points. A failed or borderline safety inspection. If any of these come up, a professional rust repair inspection is worth the time.
