What Causes Vehicle Rust?

The reaction
Rust is iron oxide — the compound that forms when iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water. Every steel body panel and frame member on a modern vehicle is vulnerable. Manufacturers slow the reaction with zinc coatings (galvanization), factory-applied primers, and undercoatings, but nothing stops it forever.
Why Ontario is worse
Two factors: road salt and freeze-thaw. Salt dissolves in melting snow and produces a brine that stays liquid at low temperatures, keeping the corrosion reaction going through most of the winter. Freeze-thaw cycles crack factory sealers and create new paths for that brine to reach bare metal.
The compounding effect
Once rust starts, it accelerates. Iron oxide occupies more volume than the iron it replaces, so it lifts paint and cracks sealer as it grows, exposing more bare metal to attack. This is why small rust problems become large problems quickly — and why early intervention is so much cheaper than late intervention.
