When Is Rust Too Severe to Repair?

The classic rule: if the cost of proper rust repair exceeds 50–60% of the vehicle's current market value, most owners are better off replacing the vehicle. That's not a hard rule — a family heirloom or a well-loved daily driver might justify a bigger investment — but it's a useful starting point.

Some rust is repairable at any cost; some is not. Fully perforated frame rails, extensive floor pan rust that extends into crossmembers, or corrosion that has consumed structural mounts may require more welding and fabrication than the vehicle can economically justify. A qualified shop will tell you honestly when this is the case.

Get a written quote, get a current value estimate for your vehicle (trade-in and private sale both matter), and compare. If the numbers are close, ask the shop whether they'd do the repair on their own vehicle — most will give you a straight answer.
